Dennis discovered pathology almost by chance. After college, he accepted a role as a lab assistant in a hospital histology department, where exposure to the work of histotechnologists and Pathologists’ Assistants sparked an unexpected passion. What began as a job quickly evolved into a purpose-driven career. He went on to train first as a histotechnologist and later as a PA. Looking back, he often reflects on how the field found him, transforming unfamiliar territory into a profession he now not only loves practicing but also loves sharing with the world.

In addition to his clinical work, Dennis has been a long-standing leader and contributor within the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants. His service includes a decade as Chair of the Publications Committee and Editor in Chief of The Cutting Edge (2008–2018), Board of Trustees member (2018–2020 and beginning a new term in 2025), Chief Financial Officer (2019–2020), and Publishing Editor of the AAPA Grossing Guidelines since 2012. These roles reflect his commitment to education, professional standards, and supporting the PA community.

Dennis also dedicates significant time to teaching pathology residents and Pathologists’ Assistant students. He regularly lectures for PA training programs and serves on the Advisory Board for the Pathologists’ Assistant program at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, supporting the next generation of pathology professionals through curriculum insight and mentorship.

That dedication to education extends far beyond formal leadership. In March 2025, Dennis launched the Pathologists’ Assistant Shadowing Network, which rapidly grew to more than 450 members. The program connects prospective PA students with practicing PAs for hands-on mentorship and helps strengthen the future pipeline of pathology professionals.

Today, Dennis brings decades of real-world laboratory experience to Mopec’s Clinical Advisory Board, where he plays an active role in shaping innovation rooted in clinical need. He values the collaborative environment of the board, a space where ideas are explored not only for efficiency but for how they ultimately advance diagnostic precision and patient care. His perspective highlights that progress in pathology is both practical and deeply human, an ongoing effort to support the people behind this essential work.

Dennis Strenk with Dr. Jeremy Li, CEO of Cision Vision and creator of the short-wave infrared InVision technology born from his research at MIT’s Koch Institute.  Featured in Episode 72, Dr. Li visited WDL to share one of the earliest InVision prototypes, showing how curiosity, engineering, and listening to the voice of the customer can come together to advance patient care.
Dennis Strenk meeting Dr. Ralph Hruban, a world-renowned pancreatic cancer pathologist and longtime Johns Hopkins leader, whose groundbreaking work in pancreatic cancer biology and commitment to education have shaped the field in profound ways. Dr. Hruban was featured in Episodes 38 and 118 of the People of Pathology Podcast.

Looking ahead, Dennis sees a powerful change on the horizon. Digital pathology and AI continue to accelerate, creating new opportunities for speed, accuracy, and connected workflows across the pathology continuum. His guiding principle remains constant, ensuring that technology strengthens expertise and elevates patient outcomes above all.

Through the People of Pathology Podcast, recently ranked as the number two Pathology Podcast You Must Follow in 2025 by Feedspot, Dennis continues to amplify the voices and innovations shaping the field. His work inspires both current and aspiring laboratory professionals.

Mopec is honored to have Dennis as part of our Clinical Advisory Board and deeply values his thoughtful, grounded approach to leadership, mentorship, and innovation in surgical pathology and beyond.
