The award recognizes companies that are innovative in their fields or business practices, while achieving growth and success and will have a breakout year in 2016.

We asked Mopec CEO Jane VanDusen to share her thoughts on what brings Mopec into the “winners circle.”

How did Mopec get its start?
Jane:  Our company was built on a solid foundation by founders Rick Bell and George Hallman back in 1992. Their vision to build innovative and cutting edge products with superior materials here in the United States, backed by exceptional customer service, paved the way forward. Rick and George had the fortitude to attract and hire some of the industry’s most talented professionals – many of whom are still with us to this day.

What does the word Mopec stand for?
Jane: Morgue, pathology, equipment, company. It began as a company dedicated to developing unique products for the anatomic pathology and clinical laboratory industries. Today we design and manufacture customized equipment for the pathology, anatomy, mortuary and necropsy industries.

What’s the significance of Mopec being named a company to watch?
Jane: Recognition of our efforts from Michigan Celebrates Small Business – an essential force behind Michigan businesses – is an honor and a true voice of confidence as we continue to expand our operations and reach our 2016 projected growth rate of 18 percent.

How has the company changed since being sold to private equity firm Blackford Capital of Grand Rapids in 2013?
Jane: Mopec has continued to realize substantial growth and produce technologically advanced products. We recently introduced the Mopec MB800, the industry’s first touch free grossing station. The grossing station’s interactive touch screen display highlights essential operational information, monitors formalin level, bio waste level, filter usage duration and ventilation performance. These and other features of our new grossing station were designed in response to the feedback we received from customers. Our engineers maintain a running dialog with the actual operators of our equipment and their valuable input is an essential part of the conceptual process. We’re leading the way through innovative technology, but we’re getting there with the tremendous support and acuity of a loyal customer base.
